Exciting news for “The Lord of the Rings” fans! Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that “multiple” new movies set in Middle-earth are in the works, expanding on the beloved world and characters created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Warner Bros. will produce the movies in collaboration with sister company New Line Cinema and Freemode, a division of Swedish entertainment company Embracer Group, who acquired the movie rights to Tolkien’s work in August 2022. A statement released by Embracer stated that the new movies will “expand upon the much-loved world and characters of Middle-earth.”

“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy directed by Peter Jackson, released between 2001 and 2003, was widely acclaimed, collecting 17 Academy Awards and generating almost $3 billion at the box office. However, as noted by Warner Bros. studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy in a statement, the vast, complex, and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. De Luca and Abdy added that “the opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor.”

New Line and Warner Bros. Animation are currently in production on an anime movie titled “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” set 183 years before the events of “The Lord of the Rings.” The story recounts the fate of Helm Hammerhand, a King of Rohan. No details were revealed about the cost of the deal or the creative team behind the new movies. However, Jackson and his collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens told CNN in a statement that they “look forward to speaking with them [Warner Bros. and Embracer] further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”

In conclusion, “The Lord of the Rings” fans can expect to see more of their favorite characters and stories on the big screen in the future. Stay tuned for more updates!
