A Louisville police officer followed his instincts—and a helpful stray dog—to find a missing three-year-old boy. Multiple officers, a drone, and a helicopter were searching the area, but it was a chance meeting with the dog that changed everything.

Officer Josh Thompson and Officer Story were canvassing near the child’s home when a dog began walking alongside Thompson.

“As I’m walking to the front door the craziest thing happens: there’s a dog, and he starts walking with me,” Thompson recalled.

Trusting the unexpected companion, Thompson joked with his body cam and followed the dog. The dog trotted ahead, barking as if urging him to hurry.

Returning to the back of the house, the dog sat next to a parked car, directing attention to it. Officer Story discovered the boy inside the vehicle, locked in with the child safety locks.

They gently coached the child until he was able to open the door, leading to a joyful embrace.

“He jumped out of the car, bear hugged my neck and wouldn’t let go.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier kid in my life,” said Thompson.

The dog’s origin remains a mystery, but Thompson called him

“a blessing from God that day.”

Thanks to this loyal friend, a family was reunified and hearts were warmed.
