  • A Nanaimo mom’s instincts saved lives in a motel fire.
  • She woke her family, then alerted other guests by pounding on doors.
  • Residents escaped safely, crediting her bravery for their survival.

In the early hours of Boxing Day in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Elizabeth Manson’s instincts helped protect dozens of motel guests from a fast-spreading fire. She quickly woke her children and rushed through smoke-filled hallways, determined to alert everyone in danger.

“I screamed, ‘Wake up! Fire! You guys, get up now!’” she shared with CHEK News.

Families rushed from their rooms, many barefoot and in pajamas, thanks to her warnings. Despite her severe asthma, Manson continued to help, inspiring pride in her daughter and gratitude from fellow guests like Nakul Joseph, who hugged her and thanked her for saving their lives.

Fire crews and emergency services responded swiftly, rescuing several people and ensuring everyone was safe. Seven guests received hospital care, but the community credits Elizabeth’s brave choices for turning a potential tragedy into a story of hope.

“I almost went back to sleep,” Elizabeth said through tears. “But something in me made me get up.”
