New research highlights hope as a powerful force for long-term happiness and success, surpassing the impact of other positive emotions.

Participants in a large Australian study who felt more hopeful enjoyed better health, education, and economic outcomes, as well as stronger friendships and a reduced sense of loneliness.

Hopeful people demonstrated higher resilience, adaptability, and determination to improve their circumstances, distinguishing it from optimism alone.

“Hope is not just a belief that things will get better (i.e., optimism), but the determination to make them better, which reflects agency and determination,” the researchers wrote.

The data revealed that moving from feeling hopeless to hopeful increased the likelihood of obtaining a bachelor’s degree by 4% and lowered the risk of unemployment and health problems in the coming years.

While the results showed a small data bias towards hopeful participants, authors noted this is valuable as it shows how hope encourages continued positive choices.

“We believe that better understanding the drivers of hope and its consequences can ultimately inform the ability of both individuals and of public policy to improve people’s lives,” the study concluded.
