  • Community and emergency teams unite to save 60 stranded pilot whales in Iceland.
  • Whales likely stranded while pursuing mackerel in warming seas.
  • Rescue efforts highlight a shift in Iceland’s relationship with whales.

In a remarkable turn of events, a mass stranding of around 60 pilot whales on Ólafsfjörður beach in Iceland concluded with a jubilant outcome.

The whales, locally known as grindhvalur, found themselves in a precarious situation last Sunday.

Thanks to the swift action of locals and emergency crews, the whales were successfully guided back into open waters by 7:00 p.m. local time.

Reports suggest that the whales were chasing mackerel, which have migrated north due to warming seas, when they became disoriented and trapped in the shallow waters.

Marc Sánchez, a visitor to Ólafsfjörður and worker at a local hotel, was taken aback by the scene.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said.

He rushed to the beach after a call from a friend and captured the dramatic event on film.

“I felt a mix of emotions,” Sánchez shared, “amazement, sadness and frustration—I wanted to help them, but it was impossible.”

The rescue effort saw dozens of villagers joining forces with emergency crews to aid the stranded mammals.

“The water was freezing, so I couldn’t stay in for long but I tried my best to assist however I could,” Sánchez added.

Iceland, one of the last countries to cease whaling, rarely makes headlines for positive whale-related stories.

However, this rescue effort marks a significant shift in the nation’s relationship with these magnificent creatures.
