Quick Smiles:

  • Walt Disney’s beloved Carousel of Progress closing July 6 for its first major renovation in three decades
  • Updated attraction will feature Walt Disney himself and travel through the 1960s, 1980s, 2000s, and a glimpse into the future
  • Disney Imagineers honoring Walt’s original vision while introducing the magic to a whole new generation of fans

Walt Disney was a visionary, far ahead of his time. He was more than the creator of Mickey Mouse; Walt truly knew what it meant to create magic.

For more than 70 years, fans have flocked to Disney Parks to experience that magic. Some of the most beloved attractions have remained nearly untouched since they opened, and fans like it that way.

Others feel that Walt would want his attractions to reflect current technological innovation. The Carousel of Progress, a Magic Kingdom must-see for many guests, will close on July 6, 2026, for a huge upgrade, according to the Disney Parks blog.

It’s Been Decades Since the Last Major Carousel of Progress Update

The last time Disney Imagineers made big changes to the Carousel of Progress was in 1994. A lot has changed in 30 years, so it seems appropriate to make some progress on the attraction as well.

The updated Carousel of Progress will feature Walt Disney himself as well as new decades. Park guests will see John, Sarah, and the rest of the family as they embrace new technologies.

“When the show first opened at the World’s Fair, its story began by looking back about 60 years to the dawn of the new century. Now more than six decades later, this new iteration mirrors that idea, starting 60 years back from today in the 1960s,” the Disney Parks Blog explains.

Guests will travel from the 1960s to the 1980s and the new millennium. The final act of the updated Carousel of Progress will take a look into the possible future.

“I can’t wait to share more of the incredible work the team is doing in the coming months as we carry on Walt’s vision, introducing the show to an entirely new generation of fans while honoring its history and heart,” Disney Parks Blog shared.

“I could not be more optimistic about the beautiful tomorrow on the way!”

We have to believe that Walt would be darn proud of the progress. This heartwarming update proves that honoring tradition while embracing innovation can create pure magic for families everywhere.
