India’s Tiger Population Soars in a Decade

Quick Smiles:
- India doubled its wild tiger numbers in just ten years.
- Protected habitats for tigers have grown by 30%.
- Local efforts and global cooperation have reversed population declines.
India’s remarkable conservation journey has led to its native tiger population doubling within a decade, as highlighted by a recent study.
After the 2010 goal to double wild tigers worldwide, India played a pivotal role in achieving this objective by 2022, alongside other nations like Nepal.
Indian states managed to set aside 53,360 square miles for tigers, helping their numbers surpass 3,600 by 2018—making up 75% of the global wild tiger population.
Regular monitoring has shown not only a surge in tiger numbers since 2006, but also a 30% increase in protected habitats for these big cats.
Economic development and community involvement in tiger-tourism have further supported their recovery, while government compensation helps reduce conflict with local residents.
“We lose 35 people to tiger attacks every year, 150 to leopards, and the same number to wild pigs. Additionally, 50,000 people die from snake bites,” said Yadvendradev Vikramsinh Jhala, lead author of the study. “In fact, within tiger reserves, you’re more likely to die from a car accident than from a tiger attack.”
Tigers are now thriving well beyond Indian borders, with inspiring stories of their return in China, preparations for their comeback in Kazakhstan, and encouraging camera trap sightings in Sumatra.
This positive turn shows the powerful impact of committed conservation efforts. Celebrate these hopeful strides for one of the world’s most iconic animals!
