Quick Smiles:

  • Leonardo, the adventurous tortoise, survived a 9-month escapade.
  • Found just a mile from home, he braved the harsh English winter.
  • His journey sparked a community search effort led by his owner.

In the picturesque region of Cumbria, England, a tortoise named Leonardo embarked on an unexpected adventure that spanned nine months and ended just a mile from his home in Ulverston.

His owner, Rachel Etches, had a habit of letting Leonardo roam freely in the garden, a practice that usually brought him great joy.

However, a momentary lapse in attention led to Leonardo’s great escape.

With winter approaching, Etches quickly launched a social media campaign to enlist help in finding her beloved pet, fearing the worst for the cold-blooded creature as temperatures plummeted.

Despite the odds, Leonardo proved his resilience.

After the spring thaw, a dog walker spotted him leisurely making his way down the street, having survived the North English winter, found food, and dodged potential threats like boisterous shepherd dogs.

Rachel Etches shared her relief and surprise, saying,

“He’s gone on his travels around our little hamlet and he was found about a mile from our house. It was totally my fault, we were out in the garden, we’d just had our second child, I got a bit distracted and he just wandered off out of our sight.”

She added,

“He’s led a very comfortable life for 13 years under a heat lamp in my house, so we didn’t think he was going to survive the winter being out for the first time.”

Leonardo’s story is a testament to the unexpected resilience of creatures and the power of community in times of need.
