London Honors Mothers With Powerful New Statue

This October, London welcomes Mother Vérité, a striking bronze statue outside St Mary’s Hospital honoring the real and powerful experiences of motherhood. Created by artist Rayvenn Shaleigha D’Clark and Frida founder Chelsea Hirschhorn, the piece aims to offer fresh representation in a city where only 4% of public statues celebrate women.

The statue’s honest depiction spotlights postpartum realities, displaying every detail as a testimony to maternal strength. After its unveiling, it will move to Portman Square for continued public admiration during the Frieze London Art Fair.

D’Clark involved a diverse group of postpartum women to ensure every element of the sculpture reflected lived experiences. Through a blend of traditional bronze casting and innovative 3D technology, the artists created a modern tribute rooted in timeless craft.

“Motherhood is at once everyday and extraordinary,” D’Clark said.

Hirschhorn, who helped commission the project, said the statue continues Frida’s goal of breaking taboos around maternal health. She added, “This is about putting mothers on the pedestal they deserve.”

The installation redefines who is honored in public spaces, casting a postpartum mother in bronze alongside celebrated figures. For many, it’s powerful recognition of mothers’ everyday courage and resilience.
