Quick Smiles:

  • A custom prosthetic leg lost to the sea returned to its owner after 10 months.
  • Good Samaritan Elizabeth Forbes found the prosthesis while fossil hunting.
  • Brenda Ogden is delighted to regain both her leg and her confidence to swim.

Brenda Ogden, 69, was left heartbroken when her new titanium prosthetic leg was swept away by a wave during a beach outing in the North Sea. Despite her swimming group’s efforts to locate it that day, the prosthesis seemed lost forever.

Ogden had waited more than a year for the custom blade after a life-changing car accident. She said the leg made water sports possible for her.

“The leg was specially made to allow me to access water easily.”

It was her first sea swim and a dream come true until the mishap.

Nearly a year later, Elizabeth Forbes, on a fossil hunt in East Yorkshire, stumbled upon the unusual item lodged on rocks.

“I saw an unusual looking strange shape from the corner of my eye when I was walking.”

Forbes recalled. She posted a photo in a local Facebook group, where the prosthesis was quickly identified as Brenda’s lost leg.

Elizabeth returned to collect the leg and made it her mission to ensure its return.

“I have a feeling Brenda thought she might never see the leg again, so I was chuffed to have found it for her and to deliver it back.”

Forbes expressed.

Brenda was overcome with gratitude and happiness upon hearing the news.

“I had come to terms that I might never see it again, but the fact that it has been found is just brilliant. Thank god for Lizzie.”

She said she was empowered by this stroke of luck and is looking forward to resuming her passion for swimming.
