The state of São Paolo, Brazil, recently honored a profoundly loyal dog named Bob Gravedigger by passing a law that allows family pets to be buried in family cemetery plots. Bob, an orange dog, spent 10 years living alongside his owner’s grave and became a beloved presence at the Taboão da Serra cemetery.

Despite efforts by the owner’s family to bring him home, Bob always returned to the gravesite, demonstrating deep devotion. He was given a green doghouse at the cemetery and became known for comforting visitors during funerals.

“People who were saddened by burying their loved ones would manage a smile when the little dog, who was crazy about balls, tried to play,” said a statement from the animal rights charity PATRE.

After Bob died in 2021, his touching story moved lawmakers to pass the “Bob Coveiro Law.” The new legislation allows cats and dogs to be buried alongside their owners as long as sanitary conditions are met.

“Anyone who has lost a pet knows: it’s not just an animal. It’s a family,” wrote Eduardo Nóbrega, one of the law’s authors. “And this law recognizes this bond, bringing more respect at the moment of farewell. Love does not end at goodbye.”

Brazil is not only the largest country in South America but also one of the world’s biggest pet-loving nations, with nearly 160 million owned animals.
