Maksim Chmerkovskiy, longtime ‘Dancing with the Stars’ favorite, recently shared his thoughts on Jan Ravnik’s first season as a pro, highlighting the challenges new pros can face while teaching intricate ballroom routines.

On the ‘The Penthouse With Peta’ podcast, he expressed that Ravnik, who danced on Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour,’ might not have the traditional ballroom background typical for the show’s pros.

“There’s zero foundation, technique, quality, understanding of the partnership. Bro, I’m getting emotional,” Chmerkovskiy said during the episode.

Ravnik, known for performing with stars like Paula Abdul and Mariah Carey, recently showcased a foxtrot routine on DWTS that judges scored 32 out of 40.

Chmerkovskiy thoughtfully questioned if Ravnik was equipped to teach ballroom techniques but admitted this was not a personal criticism.

“We had this criticism weeks ago, and I’m like, ‘Bro, is anybody going to explain it to him?’” he remarked, asking if feedback was being given.

Peta Murgatroyd, Maksim’s wife and fellow pro, praised the routine’s dramatic flair and beautiful partner work, while pointing out that some foxtrot elements were lacking. She added, “He’s learning. It’s his first season. We have to give him grace for not understanding foxtrot technique.”

The couple agreed that Ravnik’s lack of ballroom experience presents unique challenges for partner Jen Affleck, but both highlighted the importance of patience and noted Ravnik’s talent and positive qualities.

Murgatroyd observed, “Apart from that, he’s a lovely guy. He looks great. He obviously is a great dancer, but …hiring a non-ballroom dancer to teach ballroom dancing to a celebrity as a job is outrageous.”

Maksim emphasized that any shortcomings are not Ravnik’s fault, encouraging viewers to support growth on exciting new seasons of ‘DWTS.’
