Quick Smiles:

  • Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser in a film inspired by table tennis icon Marty Reisman.
  • Reisman captivated audiences with his dazzling tricks and fearless personality.
  • His journey from anxious child to sports legend inspires the movie’s energetic spirit.

“Marty Supreme” follows Timothée Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a shoe salesman with exceptional ping-pong talent whose ambitions shake up the 1950s table tennis world.

Director Josh Safdie describes the movie as an “homage” to Marty Reisman, celebrating the charisma and style of the real-life champion.

Reisman, known as “The Needle” for his slim build, became a superstar in table tennis, dazzling fans and redefining the sport’s energy.

He grew up in New York, overcoming childhood anxiety through ping-pong, and by 13 was already a junior champion hustling games at local clubs.

“Ping-Pong was the ultimate escape. My racket became a sensuous connection between the ball and my brain,” Reisman shared with Forbes in 2005.

After winning numerous national titles, Reisman made history at age 67 as the oldest person to win a national championship in a racket sport.

He became famous for spectacular shows, like performing tricks as the opening act for the Harlem Globetrotters and wowing audiences on television.

“No other player was willing to try it before a large audience. It can be embarrassing to miss four or five times in a row… It involves a communion between the racket, the ball, and the cigarette,” he wrote in his memoir of his signature stunt.

His determination to be the world’s best player fueled multiple fortunes and countless adventures, often blurring the line between daring competitor and lovable rogue.

Like Chalamet’s character, Reisman sometimes bent the rules, famously creating mischief during international competitions and always chasing his dreams with bold confidence.

Let this story remind us that embracing our quirks and daring to be different can lead to uplifting journeys and unforgettable legacies.
