New Study Upsets Assumptions About Electric Home Heating in Britain

Quick Smiles:

  • New UK homes with heat pumps use 40-67% less energy than average.
  • Peak demand stays lower than expected, protecting the grid.
  • Smart designs with insulation and solar panels deliver huge savings.

Research from Birmingham City University tracked seven all-electric social housing homes equipped with air-source heat pumps, high insulation, and solar panels over a full year.

These homes showed peak electricity demand lower than anticipated, spreading usage to avoid grid strain.

“Lower than we would expect,” said Dr Monica Mateo-Garcia, academic lead at Birmingham City University’s Centre for Future Homes.

Overall energy consumption was far below typical UK households, with heating and hot water use often beating Energy Performance Certificate estimates.

“We currently seem to be overpredicting how much power we need in new-build housing,” said Professor Richard Fitton of the University of Salford.

“We’re finding that all those reasons not to go ahead with a heat pump are slowly but surely falling away,” said Professor Aaron Gillich of London South Bank University.

These findings bolster the upcoming Future Homes Standard in 2027, mandating heat pumps and solar panels for new builds.
