Barbara Baker was driving her afternoon route in Tampa last August when she noticed something unusual on a residential street—a young child moving close to traffic.

“Look at the baby walking in the street by himself. Oh, my God,” she recalled thinking.

Baker immediately realized the child was alone, wearing pajamas and small shoes, and her heart dropped at the sight.

As she walked the sidewalk searching for the child’s family, the little boy softly cried, “Momma, Momma, Momma.”

The moment resonated deeply for Baker, who thought of her own grandchildren.

“I wanted to cry, because I thought about my grandbabies, and I’m like, ‘Oh, cars are passing, and no one is helping the baby in the road,’” she shared.

Police soon arrived and discovered the toddler had wandered several blocks from home but was able to return to his family unharmed.

“It makes me want to cry. Now I feel a little emotional, but knowing the baby is home, that’s the big thing for me,” Baker said.

Local officials say Tampa school buses act as “safe spaces,” and drivers are trained for situations just like this one.
