Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute throughout the nine-season run of “The Office,” recently reflected on the show’s mix of comedy and uncomfortable moments during a podcast conversation.

He highlighted the Season 3 episode “A Benihana Christmas” as challenging, acknowledging its portrayal of clueless and insensitive humor reflective of a certain American sensibility.

“Listen, you know, the Benihana Christmas episode where Michael and Andy draw with a Sharpie on one of the Asian women that they’ve brought back to the Christmas party is jaw-droppingly, kind of, horrific,” Wilson said. “And it’s a tricky conversation, you know?”

He noted, “They’re clueless and in their cluelessness, they’re racist and insensitive, and they’re always saying the wrong thing. And that’s Michael, Dwight and Andy — and Kevin, for that matter. So it’s a show based around clueless, insensitive, racist, sexist people that kind of mirrors the United States in a lot of ways.”

Wilson feels the series would have to be different if created today, saying, “It would have to be very, very different.”

Since its premiere in 2005, the sitcom has left a lasting impact, and the story continues with a new spinoff, “The Paper,” now streaming on Peacock. The show follows a documentary crew’s new adventure at a struggling newspaper in Ohio, with some familiar actors returning.

At a recent event for “The Paper,” Oscar Nuñez, reprising his character Oscar, addressed the topic of modern comedic boundaries, telling the crowd, “And I disagree. I think if something’s funny, you put it out there and then just stand by it.”
