Quick Smiles:

  • Once unwanted, Chewy the Shih Tzu now delights seniors in an assisted-living center.
  • The Philomena’s residents embraced Chewy, giving him a loving community and purpose.
  • Chewy lifts spirits and inspires even memory care patients to join in the joy.

Chewy, a 7-year-old Shih Tzu, once wandered Austin’s streets in need of care and companionship, but his story took a heartwarming turn at The Philomena senior living center.

After being found and cared for by Priscilla Duran, Chewy was sadly rejected by his previous owner and needed a new place to belong.

“I said, ‘What if he’s our dog?’” Duran shared, impressed by Chewy’s gentle nature and readiness to connect with people.

The residents embraced Chewy with open arms, welcoming him as a cherished member of their community.

He enjoys spending time with everyone, from joining in on Scrabble nights to riding along on walkers, always spreading joy wherever he goes.

“Our residents understand what it’s like to start fresh somewhere new,” Duran said. “Just like they found a welcoming place here, Chewy has too. He’s more than a pet—he’s part of our community.”

Chewy brightens days and comforts those in need, inspiring smiles—even in memory care—by simply being there.

“I’ve not seen him pass anybody who does not grin ear to ear by seeing this little dog,” Duran added. “Dogs are just proof that actions speak louder than words.”

Thanks to a second chance, Chewy and his new friends prove that love and happiness are always possible.
