Sassy Senior Shelter Cat Smacks Anyone Who Cannot Get His Cues Right [Video]

  • A senior cat effectively communicates what he does and does not like with shelter staff members through smacking.
  • A sign now hangs on his cage on how long he has stayed out of smacking.
  • The smacking streak sign has captured attention towards the shelter and staff members hope it would lead to him getting adopted into his forever home.

This cat certainly knows how to express his feelings so you better do things right.

For someone who has been with the shelter for just a short time, staff members already know when senior cat Max has something to say.  Or his limits have been reached.  He may enjoy the attention that he’s getting but once you have crossed the line, you get a smack.

Oromocto and Area SPCA shelter manager Tracy Marcotullio said the sort of cranky old man would “reach his arm right out through the cage and smack if he needs to.”

Now shelter staff has a sign on Max’s cage as a running tally of the days that Max does not smack anyone.

Each day Max does not smack anyone, will be recorded on the sign on his cage.

So far, the longest streak was four days!

Staff says that Max is not a bad cat.  Smacking is just his way of communicating his limits. Marcotullio said, “He just gets overstimulated, and when he’s had enough, he’s had enough.”  And the staff has already learned his likes and dislikes.

One is to let him roam around when it is time to clean his cage so he won’t feel overwhelmed.  Another one is to stack up on his favorite snacks as he is a treat monster. To get back to his good graces, all you need to do is give him canned food or Temptations treats.

And whomever breaks Max’s smacking streak gets a commemorative pin.

But even if they have been enjoying the cat’s quirks and having fun with him, they still hope that Max gets to be adopted soon into his forever home. “He deserves to get out of here and find his people,” said Marcotullio.

And even if his smacking habits has gained the attention of potential adopters both for him and the other shelter wards, he deserves a loving forever home.

We hope you find it soon, Max!
