Sister Becomes Surrogate to Twin Who Had Hysterectomy

• Sarah has gone through quite an ordeal: she battled a rare uterine cancer that eventually led to a hysterectomy.
• Knowing that her twin sister still wanted kids, Cathey offered to be Sarah’s surrogate.
• Cathey is now in her third trimester and will be giving birth to a little boy named John Ryder in August.

Twins Sarah Sharp and Cathey Stoner proved the strength of their sisterhood through good and tough times. After a rare form of cancer led to Sarah’s hysterectomy, Cathey offered to be a surrogate for her twin.

Sarah gave birth to her first child back in 2018. Several months later, she was diagnosed with choriocarcinoma, a rare form of uterine cancer that forms from leftover placental cells in the uterus after a pregnancy or miscarriage.

Sarah had to go through surgery and about six months of chemotherapy until she was pronounced cancer-free.

Sarah, 33 at the time, wanted to have more children, so her doctors did their best to preserve her uterus during her first round of treatment. Sadly, she had to undergo more chemo and a hysterectomy when her cancer came back in 2019.

Cathey occasionally joked that if Sarah would want more babies, she would carry them for her. But as Sarah’s condition worsened, Cathey made the offer more seriously.

Cathey recalled, “We were just hoping Sarah was going to be OK… Before she had her hysterectomy, my husband and I had another conversation about offering to help them in this way if it worked out.”

Sarah eventually beat cancer a second time and is now in remission.

After more discussions, they went ahead with the surrogacy plan. And out of three viable embryos, the very first implanted one took hold!

Sarah shared, “It was really refreshing to get those green lights [after] bumps in the road, taking detours, receiving hard information. It was an answer to our prayers.”

Cathey has had an easy pregnancy and is now in her third trimester. A little boy named John Ryder will be born in August!

And Sarah will be there to catch the baby and cut the umbilical cord.

Sarah shared, “I am so honored and just grateful for this incredible gift. I never thought in a million years we’d have another baby and the fact that we have a son is amazing. It felt really easy because Cathey and I just communicate really well.”

These loving twins’ sisterhood is truly something special. Cathey was not only there for her twin sister during her battle with cancer, but also helped her welcome a new life into her family.
