Mariah Cummings thought she would never see her beloved pit bull again when he was stolen in a home burglary in 2018. Fortunately, she was reunited with Hannibal two and a half years later.

Hannibal was just a puppy when Mariah adopted him in 2014. The two were inseparable, and Mariah couldn’t bear the thought of losing him.

Her worst fear came true in July 2018. She returned from a trip only to find that someone had broken into her Michigan home, and that Hannibal was missing.

The burglars took or destroyed most of her belongings, including Hannibal’s food, bowls, and leashes.

Mariah posted flyers, shared the news on social media, visited local animal shelters, and even appeared on the local news to look for Hannibal.

Mariah shared, “I was visiting shelters up until I moved to Tennessee two years later. I went to almost every animal shelter in Michigan.”

Even after moving to a different state, she would still get an alert that Hannibal may have been spotted, but it was never him.

It was only in December 2020, two and a half years after Hannibal was stolen, that she received a picture of Hannibal. He was being fostered in the same town where he went missing!

“The moment they sent me that picture, I was like, ‘That’s him. I’m on my way,’” Paige shared. She immediately got to driving that night.

Mariah was worried that Hannibal wouldn’t remember her.

But he got instantly excited the moment he saw her! He ran straight into her arms, and his tail couldn’t stop wagging excitedly.

“The tears were just rolling,” Paige shared. “It wasn’t like an actual cry, it was like my body was just crying for me.”

Hannibal had a few new scars and had to undergo surgery to remove a mast cell tumor in his shoulder.

Still, Hannibal was the same, sweet pup that Mariah remembers. She said that he’s even clingier than ever!

“We are loving him to the fullest while we have him,” Mariah shared. “And we’re thankful that we have him.”
