A Sacramento freeway became the site of extraordinary heroism when a crowd of bystanders responded to a crashed medical helicopter with incredible unity and speed.

The helicopter, which had just transported a patient, was forced down onto State Route 50, prompting drivers to stop and assist as smoke rose from the scene.

Sacramento Fire Captain Peter Vandersluis quickly assessed the urgency, directing approximately 15 to 20 volunteers to raise the aircraft and free a trapped paramedic.

“When I shouted ‘lift,’ they lifted. When I said ‘hold,’ they held,”

Vandersluis told the Associated Press.

One firefighter was able to slide under the helicopter, cut the paramedic’s seat belt, and pull her to safety before the group carefully set the helicopter down.

Witness Aimee Braddock shared,

“As soon as I saw people pushing the helicopter, I just ran over and got in line.”

Fire officials marveled at the outcome, citing it as a miracle that no one was injured during rush hour.
