  • Kang Lee’s sushi restaurant Sushiya in downtown Dallas was deeply affected by the pandemic.
  • When his grandson Andrew Kim realized how bad the situation is, he recorded a short TikTok video to help him.
  • The video went viral and the restaurant was packed the next day.

The pandemic has affected many businesses not just in the US, but around the world. Kang Lee’s sushi restaurant Sushiya in downtown Dallas was not spared.

Lee had to lay off several staff members when business became too slow. It was very hard for him because Sushiya has been with them since 2008. Lee immigrated to the U.S. from South Korea in the 1960s and has been with the restaurant business since.

Lee’s grandson, Andrew Kim, visited his grandparents last March and found out how bad business was. The high school senior from Minnesota decided to help, knowing his 80-year-old grandpa planned to retire next year.

Andrew recorded a short TikTok video inviting viewers to visit his grandfather’s sushi restaurant. Of course, he didn’t forget to show Sushiya’s address.

The video went viral, garnering millions of views. Well, it helps that he has hundreds of thousands of followers.

“It was really sad because you look up to your grandparents, and to see them struggle is really disheartening,” Andrew told the Dallas Morning News.

Thanks to Andrew and his TikTok video, Sushiya was packed the following day. Due to the reduced staff, “they had to stop taking to-go orders and turn some people away at the door,” Dallas Morning News reported. Good thing “everyone was understanding and patient.”

“It’s been a different crowd than we’re used to,” said staff member Junok Kim, known to regulars as Mama Kim. “It’s groups of people coming in and a lot of young people, but everyone is so kind and so nice.”

Even Andrew’s grandpa couldn’t believe that “people were lined up at the door!”

Now, the business is booming. The other good news is, Lee was able to rehire the staff members he laid off.

According to Lee, ever since Andrew posted the TikTok video, “Sushiya went from a year straight pulling in just 50% of its usual revenue, going back up to 95%.”

Good job, Andrew. And more power to Sushiya!
