Tennessee Baby Arrives Nearly 13 Pounds

Shelby Martin noticed unusual pains during her third pregnancy, unaware she was carrying a record-setting baby.

On July 29, Shelby, 30, gave birth to Cassian—a baby weighing 12 pounds, 14 ounces—astonishing the hospital staff in Dixon, Tennessee.

“I didn’t think I was going to survive!” Martin shares.

Doctors planned a cesarean after discovering Cassian measured 10 pounds at 36 weeks.

“As soon as they pulled him out, everyone in the operating room collectively gasped,” she recalls.

Though she did not have gestational diabetes, postpartum tests revealed insulin resistance that impacted Cassian’s initial health.

“That’s why he was so puffy,” Martin explains. “He couldn’t even open his eyes for three days.”

After ten days in the NICU, Cassian was strong enough to join his family at home.

“He’s the sweetest little boy,” Martin says. Now, at 10 weeks old, he weighs 16 pounds, placing him in the 97th percentile.

Cassian’s arrival came on an especially meaningful day: both Shelby’s birthday and exactly one year after experiencing a miscarriage.

The hospital celebrated the family’s resilience and love, calling their story a “beautiful reminder of resilience and love.”
