  • Movie theater pickles have origins tracing back to Germany.

If you’re catching a movie in Texas and hear a satisfying crunch, it’s probably someone enjoying a pickle with their popcorn!

Many Texans, along with moviegoers in other Southern states, pair pickles with popcorn as a beloved cinema treat.

On a recent episode of “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce,” Demi Lovato shared her passion for pickles and explained how she discovered the snack was a regional favorite.

“Not the spear, the whole pickle,” Lovato clarified, recalling her first time noticing the tradition at a Texas theater.

When Lovato visited a movie theater in Los Angeles and asked for a pickle, she was met with confusion, realizing it’s a Southern, and especially Texan, custom.

“You eat it while you watch your movie and it’s the best snack. It lasts you the whole movie,” Lovato enthused.

Kylie Kelce was stunned by this cinema snack choice, declaring, “This is not a revelation I was prepared to have today. That sounds delicious.”

Other Southern states like Louisiana and Arkansas, as well as some theaters in New Hampshire, South Dakota, and Alaska, offer this salty delight alongside classic concessions.

Pickles have been a fixture in Texan theaters since at least the 1950s, and their history can be traced even further back to German cinema traditions.

In 1957, The Dallas Morning News noted that Germans enjoyed hearty snacks, including pickles, throughout opera performances.
