  • Hungarian citizens use thermal spa water to restore drying grasslands.
  • Ingenious water management has helped revive groundwater and support wildlife.
  • Local volunteers set an inspiring example of environmental care.

The Great Hungarian Plain has faced worsening drought, threatening the iconic grasslands and agriculture of the region. However, resourceful citizens have found a positive solution by redirecting outflow water from spas to hydrate local fields.

This creative approach now brings precious moisture back to areas in need, supporting crops and restoring natural wetlands. Volunteers known as “Water Guardians” have led the effort to channel thermal water onto land previously left parched by the drying climate.

Oszkár Nagyapáti, a participating farmer, explained,

“I was thinking about what could be done, how could we bring the water back or somehow create water in the landscape. There was a point when I felt that enough is enough. We really have to put an end to this. And that’s where we started our project to flood some areas to keep the water in the plain.”

By flooding a six-acre field, these volunteers have already seen improvements in groundwater and a flourishing of plant and animal life nearby. Scientists say this effort benefits not just the immediately flooded area but also several surrounding kilometers.

“After the water guardians’ first attempt to mitigate the growing problem in their area, they said they experienced noticeable improvements in the groundwater level, as well as an increase of flora and fauna near the flood site,” Euro News reported.

Nagyapáti hopes their project inspires more communities to protect their water resources, saying,

“This initiative can serve as an example for everyone, we need more and more efforts like this. We retained water from the spa, but retaining any kind of water, whether in a village or a town, is a tremendous opportunity for water replenishment.”

It’s a heartening story of ingenuity and collaboration showing that every drop can make a difference. If you’re seeking more uplifting stories like this, stay tuned with us for your daily boost of optimism!
