  • A child playing with this father’s phone accidentally dials 911.
  • The hang-up call prompted Deputy Kent of Hernando County Sheriff’s Office to respond to the site where they located an unconscious man.
  • Man was rushed to the hospital by paramedics after regaining breathing.

Children who get their hands on their parents’ phones are common.  But this time, a cell phone-fiddling toddler managed to do a 911 hang-up call.  Fortunately, Deputy Nathan Kent of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office responded. The call meant saving the life of the toddler’s father.

According to the media release of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the 911 hang-up call came from an apartment complex in Spring Hill.  Despite getting this type of calls, commonly, Deputy Kent decided to respond.

When they reached the site, Deputy Kent saw an unsupervised toddler walking without clothes on at the apartment’s parking lot.

Kent said that having a kid himself, he was concerned why there was no one with the kid. “And that’s when I started looking around, and I saw the apartment complex door open with a bunch of kid toys,” he added.

Kent went in the opened door and called out but there was no response. And there, lying unconscious on the floor was a man.  He checked and the man had no pulse but was breathing. He immediately did some chest compressions.

After the man started breathing, paramedics rushed him to the hospital for more treatment, according to the release.  “Hospital staff advised the man was having a medical episode but would make a full recovery.”

If not for the child messing around with his father’s phone, his father would not have been saved in time.

Kent said, “The phone number, we looked later on, you could see that [the child] tried typing the password and it had 30 attempts that were the wrong password. He added that it was probably accidental that the toddler hit the 911 button.

Kent said that parents can learn a lesson from the incident. “My biggest thing is teaching your kids what to do in times like this, saying, ‘Hey, if something happens, go to a neighbor, get my phone, call somebody.” He added, “Try to have some kind of setup just like a fire drill.”
