Quick Smiles:

  • Major cancer cases found preventable through lifestyle changes
  • Africa surges ahead with record-breaking solar power growth
  • Global momentum builds for fairer tax systems and climate justice

New research finds that over a third of cancer cases globally are avoidable, offering hope for millions. Simple changes in habits such as quitting smoking, exercising more, and protecting against infections can significantly reduce risk.

“Addressing these preventable causes represents one of the most powerful opportunities to reduce the global cancer burden,” said Dr Isabelle Soerjomataram of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Medical advances, including new vaccines and therapies, are further boosting survival rates, with notable progress in countries like England and Scotland.

In Africa, solar power adoption soared by 54% last year, the fastest increase yet. Communities and businesses are embracing affordable solar technology, transforming access to clean energy and driving sustainable growth.

“Solar plus storage is the hope of Africa,” shared Sonia Dunlop, CEO of the Global Solar Council. “This is the technology that can bring energy access, sustainable development, green growth and resilience to natural disasters and extreme weather.”

Alongside these energy triumphs, the push for global tax justice gained momentum with the United Nations hosting talks on taxing the ultra-wealthy and fossil fuel corporations. This initiative aims to reduce inequality and better fund responses to the climate crisis.

“The outcome of the talks will impact people everywhere, and shape economies and livelihoods for generations to come,” said the Tax Justice Network.
