Truck drivers keep America moving, and this year, Stacy Batiste’s dedication and skill were celebrated in a heartwarming way. After being nominated by his best friend, Batiste was chosen from thousands of entries to win the Road Warrior contest, earning a state-of-the-art red semi-truck and a $50,000 check.

The Marine Corps veteran from Lafayette, Louisiana, achieved this honor after driving more than five million miles without a single accident during his 34-year professional journey. Batiste was stunned to receive the largest prize in the contest’s history, which is sponsored by Pilot, a major travel center chain.

“I learned a lot from that. and I just transitioned that into my life.”

He credits his success to discipline from his time in the Marines, noting, “With the military training, I’m alert.”

“You have to watch everyone out there: Sometimes you can tell, ‘Hey, he’s gonna to do this, or he’s gonna cut in front of you at the first opportunity’.”

“I back off and take my time. I’m always early.”

The Diesel Brothers built the cherry-red Kenworth semi just for Batiste, fulfilling his lifelong passion for trucks. As an added surprise, his family and best friend joined the celebration when Pilot presented him with the keys while he was on the road at a Flying J stop in Texas.

Batiste is also a mentor to younger drivers and a leader in his local community. “I love what I do and I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

“I’m gonna ride til I die or they take me out this truck, I’ll be honest with you on that part… I got diesel in my veins.”

Second-place winner Bobby Peeker, also a Marine Corps veteran, will receive $10,000 plus a $25,000 donation to a veteran-support charity of his choice.

Jordan Spradling, senior vice president of transportation at Pilot Company, said, “They both are prime examples of the positive impact professional drivers have on and off the road.”

If you know someone who deserves recognition or want to see more inspiring stories, the Road Warrior contest continues to spotlight truckers making a difference across the country.
