Vibrant Peacock Frescoes Revealed at Ancient Villa

Recent conservation at the Villa di Poppea near Pompeii has uncovered dazzling frescoes, including lively peacocks and the comedic Roman theater character Pappus.

Archaeologists used innovative cast molds to map colonnades of ornamental trees, exactly matching patterns found in the villa’s portico.

The villa, thought to belong to Poppaea Sabina, second wife of Emperor Nero, is famed for its lavish Hall of the Peacock, where vivid pigments and intricate details shine.

Additional rooms feature stucco, colorful frescoes, and dazzling floor mosaics, revealing the rich artistry of this ancient home.

“These first results offer new and promising research perspectives for our understanding of the plan of the villa and for the study of the interactions between human settlement and the natural environment in the long term,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

Conservators are working carefully to preserve the delicate colors, including rare Egyptian blue, for future generations.
