Quick Smiles:

  • Innovative VR experiences show the global journey of vaccines.
  • First-hand stories connect viewers emotionally to healthcare workers.
  • Free app now brings these powerful stories to US schools and communities.

A Minnesota company, REM5 STUDIOS, is harnessing virtual reality to spotlight the heroic efforts behind vaccine delivery, supported by the Gates Foundation and partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Their latest project, Apporter La Vie, immerses viewers in the journey of frontline worker Kasongo as he delivers vaccines across rivers and rugged terrain in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“What we’re trying to do is close the distance,” says REM5’s director of engagement Brian Skalak.

Through visually stunning, ultra-high-definition footage, users experience the challenges and triumphs faced by health workers as they maintain the crucial “cold chain” to keep vaccines viable.

“It’s about presence, not novelty,” says CEO Amir Berenjian.

VR experiences like Apporter La Vie and Polio’s Last Mile have already inspired more than 11,000 leaders and advocates at global health events, highlighting the mission to eradicate polio and protect children worldwide.

Amber Zeddies from the Gates Foundation describes the project as “a powerful storytelling tool that restores urgency, proximity and human clarity to a mission that cannot afford to be forgotten – ending polio once and for all.”

With vaccine hesitancy on the rise in the United States, REM5 now brings these inspiring VR stories into community groups, schools, and homes through a freely available app for Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro headsets.

“People think VR is just for gaming,” says Skalak. “But we’re using it for something completely different. We’ve had grandmothers and six-year-olds try it for the first time, and both walk away saying, ‘Now I get it’.”

The response has been deeply impactful, including from polio survivors moved by seeing the collective effort to protect new generations.
