Wolverines Make a Comeback in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has unveiled an exciting initiative to bring wolverines back to the state, following new legislation passed in 2024. These incredible animals, once missing for a century, could soon flourish in Colorado’s high elevations.

“Colorado has great unoccupied wolverine habitat, and we have the opportunity to conserve a species that has been missing from our state,” said former Senator Perry Will, who championed the legislation.

The Colorado Wolverine Restoration Plan involves releasing about 45 wolverines in strategic mountain regions, increasing their chances to thrive. Dr. Robert Inman, CPW Wolverine Coordinator, emphasized the value of a planned reintroduction, saying, “Colorado and the wolverine population will be better off with a planned reintroduction.”

Wolverines have survived in small populations across the northwest, but Colorado’s unique landscape offers ideal territory for up to 100 individuals. With large ranges and low natural densities, even 50 to 100 wolverines would match their historical numbers in the area.

Unlike previous efforts with grey wolves, the wolverine project is expected to have little impact on local livestock, with fair compensation measures planned just in case. The ski industry is especially enthusiastic, recognizing both conservation and community benefits.
