  • Tiffany DeLaCruz loves watching the snails in her workplace, who usually appear during spring and summer.
  • When she noticed that they use the walkway which has a heavy foot traffic, Tiffany made snail crossing sign so people will be mindful of their step.
  • Since then, everyone has learned to share that walkway with the tiny snails!

Tiffany DeLaCruz has been anticipating spring and summer, when the weather starts to get warmer. This is the season when snails appear outside her workplace, and the sight of them is something she enjoys.

“I’m in New York, and this year they came out towards the end of April,” Tiffany told The Dodo. “They seem to be more active in the early mornings and on warm, humid days or the day after it rains.”

Tiffany noticed that her snail ‘colleagues’ would usually make their way across a walkway at the bottom of a staircase, where a lot of people are also passing through. This worries Tiffany as the snails might have been accidentally stepped on.

“It’s a dangerous spot for a snail, but that’s the path they’ve chosen, and we have to share that space with them,” Tiffany said.

Wanting to keep her little friends safe from passersby who might stomp on them, Tiffany came up with the sweetest idea!

She put up a snail-crossing sign on the railing along the stairs to notify everyone to watch their step and be aware of the snails underneath.

“I wanted to make people aware that there are smaller lives among us and to keep an eye out for them,” she said. “Safety first!”

Tiffany’s plan was successful. People who use both the walkway and the stairs have become more mindful of the tiny creatures who just want to have a little share of the walkway.

Now, Tiffany can watch her little friends, as much as she pleases, without worrying that somebody might just trample them.
