Seven-year-old William Tuckwell from Bath, England, is experiencing new freedom after a remarkable operation rebuilt his jaw using pieces of his own ribs. Born with Treacher Collins syndrome, William previously needed a tracheostomy to survive due to a severely underdeveloped jaw.

“That little tube dominated everything,”

recalled his mother, Kate.

For years, his family focused on simply keeping him alive and safe.

This year, a team at Bristol Children’s Hospital led by Mr. Alistair Cobb crafted new jaw joints for William using rib segments from each side of his body. The delicate surgery lasted seven hours, followed by a month of gradual jaw lengthening with daily adjustments by his family.

Kate remembered a hopeful turning point, saying,

“One day a piece of spaghetti came through his nose. I thought, maybe… this might have worked.”

The procedure was a success—William no longer requires a breathing tube and is excited to eat with friends whenever he likes.

“If I’m hungry, I can just get food for my friends. Here you go!”

he cheerfully offered.
