$1.57 Million Boost for Senior Dogs’ Happy Golden Years!

Just last week, a tremendous boost was given to senior dogs across the United States. The Grey Muzzle Organization, the nation’s largest nonprofit dedicated to these seasoned companions, announced an impressive $1.57 million in grants to 119 animal welfare groups.

“Senior dogs have so much life to live, and love to give, yet they’re often the last to be adopted and the first at risk when shelters run out of space,” expressed Denise Fleck.

This funding will allow organizations in 33 states to provide essential services such as medical and dental care, adoptions, and foster and hospice programs.

A shining example of this impact is Maya, a senior dog who spent a decade being bred in a cramped pen. Rescued but at risk of euthanasia due to overcrowding, her fate changed thanks to a pet sanctuary in Arizona and the funding from Grey Muzzle.

“I am so excited that her story is getting out there to help raise awareness about senior dogs,” said Caroline Mirtich, Maya’s new mom.

Since its inception in 2008, The Grey Muzzle has granted $7.3 million to support senior dogs nationwide. This year, two standout recipients are The Golden Bark Foundation and Czar’s Promise.

Founded in 2022 and entirely volunteer-run, The Golden Bark Foundation in Utah provides safe foster homes for senior dogs. Their grant will specifically support dental care, as a staggering 80% of their elder dogs suffer from painful dental disease.

Meanwhile, Czar’s Promise, which helps families facing pet cancer diagnoses, continues its mission with the support of Grey Muzzle. They are funding chemotherapy and radiation for dogs aged 7 and older, offering more precious moments with their families.

“If 50 is the new 30 for humans, why not for our older best friends?” asked the director of the Grey Muzzle Organization.

These grants are a testament to the belief that senior dogs deserve to enjoy their golden years with love and dignity.
