Millions of Ukrainians and foreign residents in the country have been displaced due to senseless violence from Russia. But as they seek shelter in neighboring countries or local shelters, they have found solace in each other and in their pets, whom they refused to leave behind.
There have been countless stories of residents being forced to leave their homes, carrying what little belongings they could take with them. They definitely didn’t want to leave their pets, even though it was a lot more difficult to travel while keeping them in mind.
Take a look at the measures people are taking to ensure their beloved pets are safe.
1. Bomb shelters and makeshift shelters, such as the subway, have become safe havens to people and their pets.
2. Making the journey is already dangerous, and traveling with pets makes it harder.
3. But Ukrainians remained strong. The people and their pets drew strength and courage from each other.
4. Several neighboring coutnries have relaxed their traveling requirements to ease the way for Ukrainian refugees.
5. Previously, pet owners were faced with rigorous entry requirements for pets, which prevented them from leaving with their pets.
6. The European Commission decided to advise member states to cut back on their pet entry requirements.
7. They hoped that the Feb. 25 advisory would give refugees “one less thing to worry about.”
8. Many countries have followed their request.
9. These countries include Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia.
10. The European Commissions health service said, “Hopefully, this means Ukrainian refugees will have one less thing to worry about in these dark and difficult times.”
11. Living in a crowded and cold environment is difficult, but they have found comfort in their beloved pets.
12. Ukrainian officials are also doing everything they can to get people and their pets to safety.
13. The Ukrainian forces made sure to include pets in their evacuation efforts.
14. Several organizations, such as UNICEF, have sent teams to areas in need.
15. Refugees at the temporary center on the border of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine received the frist batch of humanitarian aid from the UNICEF Moldova team.
A helpful community is a great boon in times like these. Offering a helping hand to everyone in need, including animals, has become more important than ever.
