Quick Smiles:

- The exhibition marks 800 years since the beloved saint’s passing.
- Visitors worldwide are invited to experience this rare and meaningful moment in Assisi.
For the first time ever, the remains of Saint Francis of Assisi will be placed on public display, commemorating 800 years since his death. This extraordinary event will invite visitors and pilgrims from around the world to the Basilica of Assisi, where his remains have remained concealed for centuries.
Thanks to approval from the Holy Father Leo XIV, the relics will be moved from beneath the Basilica to the foot of the Papal altar in the lower church, from February 22nd to March 22nd, 2026. The display is seen as a profound invitation to prayer, reflection, and gratitude.
“This exposition, rooted in the Gospel theme of the seed that dies to bear fruit in love and fraternity, invites us to reflect on the life of the Saint, which continues to bear fruit 800 years later and still inspires humanity along the path of peace, fraternity, service to the poor, joy, and care for creation,” reads a statement from the Sacro Convento, reported by Vatican News.
Saint Francis, widely regarded as the patron saint of Italy, animals, and the city of San Francisco, remains a foundational figure for both faith and Italian heritage. The Italian government recently declared his feast day, October 4th, a national civic holiday to honor his legacy.
He founded the Order of Friar’s Minor in the 13th century, championing compassion for all living beings and stewardship of the earth. Saint Francis’s teachings inspired a tradition of care for nature and animals that endures today.
His philosophy embraced all of creation, urging humanity to act as gentle stewards rather than exploiters. This message resonates with millions, including those outside the Christian faith, as expressed by Pope Francis, who adopted his papal name in tribute to the saint’s legacy.
The upcoming “San Francesco Lives” exposition is open to all, with visitors encouraged to reserve their visit ahead of time. This once-in-a-lifetime event is sure to fill Assisi with joyful reflection on a life that changed the world.
Don’t miss the chance to share this uplifting news and to experience the enduring spirit of Saint Francis.
