We all have favorite teachers who changed our lives in profound ways. Some helped us fall in love with reading, others made challenging subjects click, and many guided us through difficult personal moments. Teaching isn’t a career path chosen for fame or fortune—it’s a calling for those who truly want to make a difference.

For “Today Show” host Willie Geist, his 6th-grade teacher at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, New Jersey did something extraordinary. Mr. Kaplan didn’t just teach important lessons—his classroom became the place where Willie met the love of his life on September 3, 1986.

“This is wild. I met @ChristinaSharkeyGeist 40 years ago *today* — on September 3, 1986 — in Mr. Kaplan’s homeroom at George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, NJ… just as Bananarama was poised to seize the top spot on the charts with ‘Venus,’” Willie shared.

Willie and Christina had absolutely no idea how that ordinary September day in 6th grade would transform their entire lives. But looking back now, they couldn’t be more grateful for that serendipitous homeroom assignment.

“Despite my general 11-year-old vibe in this class photo, Christina agreed to marry me 17 years later. That serendipitous 6th Grade homeroom assignment has given me everything. Thank you, Mr. Kaplan!” Willie wrote on Instagram.

The heartwarming post touched thousands of fans who rushed to congratulate the happy couple on their incredible journey from middle school classmates to life partners.

“I love you and Christina’s ‘love story’! It’s wild that 40 years have gone by! Happy 40 years of knowing each other, and here’s to many more loving memories for you, Christina, and Mr. Kaplan,” one fan wrote.
