Quick Smiles:

  • NASA and Nokia are working together to bring 4G connectivity to the Moon.
  • Children of astronauts may soon video call their parents in space.
  • The new lunar network could lower costs for off-world communications.

Children of astronauts may soon be able to video call their parents in space, as NASA wants to bring terrestrial 4G to the Lunar surface. Ostensibly to prepare for a semi-permanent human presence there, an outer spatial 4G network would significantly streamline and lower costs for off-world communications.

Partnering with Nokia’s Bell Labs, the simple idea is to extend our existing cellular infrastructure to another celestial body. This means a familiar, reliable connection for everything from navigation to live family chats.
