95 years ago today, Cristo Redentor, or Christ the Redeemer, opened to the public in the hills above Rio de Janeiro. Standing 98 feet high, and with arms stretching 92 feet wide, the statue was built on top of Mount Corcovado by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa.

Christ the Redeemer differs considerably from its original design, which featured a globe in the statue’s left hand and a cross in its right. The final version shows both arms outstretched, creating the welcoming gesture that has become world-famous.

The monument has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Brazil and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing millions of visitors each year who come to marvel at its stunning views and powerful presence overlooking the city.
