  • Steve was abandoned outside last year in the middle of winter.
  • After being rescued, it took several months for him to recover and trust humans again.
  • Now, he lives his best life with his new family, who simply loves his goofy personality.

A dog abandoned in the middle of winter was fortunately rescued, which led to him finding his forever family — allowing his playful and goofy personality to shine through.

Poor Steve was abandoned outside last winter amid the freezing cold. He was found in the middle of the night, tied to a lamppost at a bus stop in Canterbury, England. His leg was also broken, giving him a lot of pain.

Dogs Trust was alerted to his condition, so they quickly picked him up and brought him to the vet. They then turned him over to RSPCA.

Senior vet Áine Maguire of the RSPCA Finsbury Park Animal Hospital said that Steve was “cowering and terrified when he arrived,” especially around people and needles.

Fortunately, his leg was fixed after an emergency surgery. He recovered at the animal hospital for a month before moving to RSPCA’s Leybourne Animal Centre, where he would eventually recover from his deep emotional scars.

Behavior and welfare advisor Jacque Kaye said that it was a difficult start.

Steve would retreat and growl whenever someone would approach him. The staff also had no idea what his previous life had been like or how he got his injury. They had no idea if Steve’s wariness and anxiety around people was innate or caused by something.

The shelter staff made sure to be very patient with Steve while showering him with love and attention. As they slowly earned his trust, Steve’s playful and goofy personality started to show.

It took several months, but Steve was finally ready for adoption. His happy and goofy personality earned him a lot of interest!

The shelter staff were happy to find the best fit for Steve, but also a bit sad to see him go. They had all gotten attached to him.

Now, Steve is living his best life in his new home. His family especially loves his goofy energy!

Steve’s mom, Suzi, said that he is as energetic as a puppy.

“He loves cuddles and toys. It’s like the puppyhood he missed out on is coming out,” she shared.

Suzi thanked everyone who helped rescue Steve and care for him.

“It’s really rewarding to adopt a dog who needs this kind of care,” Suzi added. “We couldn’t be happier — and there will be plenty of new toys under the tree for him this Christmas.”

Last winter may have been the worst for Steve, but he’s sure to have his best Christmas this year, and many more holidays to come!
