  • Senior dog was found curled up in a ball after being abandoned in a blizzard by her family in Ecorse, Michigan.
  • Multiple agencies worked together to rescue the pup, take her to a vet for emergency medical care and find her a home.
  • After just days of foster care, the pup has regained its sweet nature and greets people with her wagging tail.

During the blizzard that swept North America, a senior dog was found abandoned by her family in Ecorse, Michigan.  She lay curled up in a ball for warmth and trying to fight the cold.  A thin layer of snow was already settling on her fur when rescuers found her.

P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue board member Lauren Boesen said, “She’d been outside for a day and a half in the freezing cold. It was, like, two degrees Fahrenheit out with 30 mph winds.”

They picked the dog named Emmy and brought her to a vet for emergency medical care.

It was an inter-agency effort to get Emmy off from the freezing temperature. Friends of River Rouge Animal Shelter first sounded the alarm and call for help on social media, The PAWS Clinic heeded the call and transported the dog to Pet Care Clinic Lincoln Park where she was examined fully.

Emmy was so thin that “Everyone kind of thought she wasn’t going to make it,” according to Boesen.  She had elbows and knees pressure sores and was covered in fleas. Boesen added that she must have been kept in a cage for a long time, neglected and was estimated to be around 8 or 9 years old.

Her condition needed emergency veterinary care and friends at P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue stepped in to immediately bring her.

There, they worked to bring her body temperature up and her wounds tended to.  And all who came in contact with Emmy fell in love with her for she is a sweet girl who always greets her caregivers by wagging her tail.

As soon as her temperature was stable, Boesen picked her up and brought her to a foster home. And she was amazed at the transformation from the shivering and sad pup to a wiggly, welcoming pup who wanted other people to give her pets.

On their way, they stopped by P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue where Emmy climbed onto the sofa, indicating that she was ready for a loving home after an experienced foster family would prepare her for it.

And Emmy really showed how prepared she was for her forever home as within just a couple of days, she snuggled underneath a Christmas tree together with her foster dog siblings in their holiday pajamas.

We hope you end up in your forever home soon, Emmy!
