Quick Smiles:

  • Frank LaFerrara and Johnny Cerda rescued a young woman from a strong rip current in Ocean City, New Jersey.
  • Frank bravely swam out first and reassured the panicked woman before helping guide her back toward safety.
  • With Johnny’s support and a flotation device, they brought her safely to shore, earning praise for their selfless actions.

Frank LaFerrara was soaking up the sun on the Jersey Shore when he heard someone calling for help.

“A gentleman down by the water line here, he starts screaming for help and I said OK, gotta go,” he recalled.

Without hesitation, Frank plunged into the waves and swam out to reach a young woman struggling in the rough surf.

“She got over to me and she jumped on my shoulders with her arms and started pushing me under,” Frank said.

“So I had to push her back and say, ‘Calm down, relax. I’m here to help.’”

Johnny Cerda soon joined with a flotation device, and together they guided her back toward the beach.

The quick actions of these two beachgoers brought the woman safely to land before emergency crews arrived.
