Sky watchers are in for a treat this autumn as a second supermoon lights up the night, marking the brightest and largest moon of 2025. After October’s stunning Harvest Moon, this encore invites everyone to look up in wonder.

A supermoon happens when the Moon reaches perigee, its closest point to Earth, resulting in a noticeably bigger and brighter lunar display.

The Moon will reach peak brightness after sunrise at 8:19 am Eastern Time, but its glow will still be vibrant for nighttime walkers.

Remarkably, this is the second of three consecutive supermoons this year, providing more dazzling views for enthusiasts.

While size differences can sometimes be an optical illusion near the horizon, supermoons are best known for their extra brightness—shining 16% brighter than an average full moon and an impressive 30% brighter than a micromoon.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac shares that the “Beaver Moon” name comes from fur trappers, who saw it as a sign beavers were safely sheltered for winter. Other cultures also find meaning; it’s called the Deer Rutting Moon by the Dakota and Lakota, and the Digging Moon by the Tlingit.
