Blind dog showcases impressive fetching skills [Video]

Meet Critter. He’s a smart dog who’s excellent at fetching, despite being born blind.

His mom, Kat, shared how Critter is “crazy functioning” despite his lack of sight. “You’d never know he’s blind except for the occasional running into walls and such,” she added.

Kat proudly showcased Critter’s fetching prowess by sharing a couple of videos on social media.

In one video, we can see Critter placing his paw on his mom’s hand before she throws the ball for him.

He patiently waits for the ball to be thrown and immediately runs after it. After a few bounces, Critter gets a hold of the ball and picks it up in his mouth. He then runs toward his mom and drops the ball in front of her for another round.

It turns out that a lack of sight doesn’t hinder dogs much. They just depend on their other senses.

Pet health and behavior editor Jenna Stregowski of RVT and Daily Paws confirmed commenters’ statements that Critter simply uses his sense of smell and hearing to track down the ball.

Critter, who can most likely smell the ball, can also hear and feel the movement in the air as it’s thrown. He can also hear it when it lands on the ground and bounces. When he picks up the ball, he knows where to return it when he hears his mom call him back.

Jenna explained, “Really, sight is probably the weakest sense that dogs have. They are minimally affected by blindness compared to humans.”
