“Of all of the hundreds of windmills which were once found around Yorkshire, this is the only working one left.”

Head miller Steve Potts and 34 other volunteers are determined to keep this rare piece of heritage alive.

“We think it is important to keep the industry of milling going. It is a dying art in many ways and if we weren’t doing it, in a couple of years there may be no one left who knows how to.”

Originating with the Waud family, the mill changed hands over generations before being restored in 2001. Since then, it has proudly supplied York shops with freshly milled flour, keeping a delicious piece of history alive.

The Holgate Windmill stands as a testament to resilience, bridging the past and present for everyone who enjoys its wholesome flour.
