Quick Smiles:

  • Mom finds harmony by having her sons run a mile together after arguments.
  • Running side by side lifts their moods and rekindles their friendship.
  • Parents and experts praise the unique approach for fostering teamwork and emotional regulation.

Sunny Jo Konop of Washington State uses an uplifting strategy to resolve her sons’ squabbles: she has them run a mile together in perfect step.

Walker, 12, and Winnie, 10, are homeschooled brothers who share motocross races and daily adventures—plus the typical sibling disagreements.

“I make them do it in step because I know how competitive they are,” Konop said. “That’s the rule.”

By the end of each mile, the tension fades as laughter takes over, and the boys reconnect.

Konop hopes this shared solution will stay with them through adulthood, teaching them that differences can be left behind as they move forward together.

“At the end of the day, when Dad and I are gone, they’ll only have each other. So sometimes the best fix is a run — side by side, no competition, just getting the bad juju out,” she wrote. “Before long, they’ll forget they’re mad at each other and just be mad at me instead. 😂.”

Other parents quickly embraced the idea, sharing their own stories and celebrating the bond-building approach: “This! Works magic for my 2 boys.”

Boston-based pediatric psychologist Keneisha Sinclair-McBride says this technique combines exercise, structure, and teamwork—a recipe for helping kids manage emotions and strengthen their bond.

“You’re getting physical activity, which always helps regulate mood, and they have to work together toward a common goal,” Sinclair-McBride said.

She recommends any shared, structured activity that helps siblings overcome disagreements together, whether it’s running, raking leaves, or making a meal.
