Quick Smiles:

  • Kaity Bucaro and Robbie Morris pivoted their cancelled Mexico wedding into a magical Chicago event in just four days.
  • Local vendors flooded them with free support, securing upscale venue The Alston and stunning photography.
  • 150 guests celebrated their love, showcasing Chicago’s warm community spirit.

After their dream destination wedding in Mexico was scrapped due to unrest, the couple posted on Instagram seeking help for a hometown ceremony on their original date.

Overwhelmed by generosity, they tied the knot on February 27 at The Alston restaurant, far beyond their shoestring budget dreams.

The pair appeared on TODAY on March 2, sharing gratitude for Chicago’s wedding community.

“Honestly we’ve been planning a wedding in Mexico for a year, so we didn’t know much about the wedding community in Chicago, and so it truly was just like, who’s available, what’s out there,” Kaity Morris told Craig Melvin and Hoda Kotb. “It’s in four days. We really wanted to stick with our date that we had planned, and I could never have imagined the outpour of love and support that came our way.”

Their original Puerto Vallarta plans shifted after violence following a cartel leader’s death, but they first checked on Guadalajara vendors’ safety.

“That was we did first, was immedately call our friends and vendors,” Robbie Morris said. “We’ve really made great relationships through that process of a year of planning, and (we wanted to) check on them, see how they were first. See what was really going on there.”

“And I think just at that point there was so much uncertainty in that moment, so we decided to pivot and try to put something together in just a few days. We said, ‘Challenge accepted,’” he continued.

Chicago residents for three years after meeting at Ohio University, Kaity produces at a marketing agency while Robbie plans for the Regional Transit Authority; both share cooking passions on Instagram.

Photographer Natalie Hurley captured the joy gratis.

“This is one of those weddings that I will always remember!” she said on TODAY. “I was hoping to capture those emotions for them. I was hoping to capture their family, their friends, and all the people that were still able to celebrate them on their special day.”

Kaity’s aunt officiated amid 150 guests.

“We love Chicago so much, but like I said, the outpour of love that we received from people who don’t know us, but just can relate to a story like this was just overwhelming,” Kaity said.

“It really was,” Robbie added. “They say it takes a village, but it really took a city for us. And Chicago’s our home, and so we’re so proud to be Chicagoans and to have the community wrap their arms around us.”

During the reception, they paused to savor the filled dance floor and laughter.

“A lot of advice from people to just take a second, look at the room, and we did just that,” Kaity Morris said. “We looked back and with the dance floor filled, with everybody, everybody’s laughing, just so much love in the room. And that’s truly all we wanted at the end of the day.”

“Like I said, whether it was Mexico or Chicago, strip away all the fluff of the wedding planning and all the details, it really was about celebrating Robbie and I, and that’s exactly what our people showed up to do.”

Post-interview, they jetted to Mexico for a honeymoon, noting calm restoration.

“We’ve talked to people. Things are really getting back to normal there and safe,” Robbie said. “We love it there, we’re excited to get some sun and relax and decompress.”
