Quick Smiles:

  • After his wheelchair was stolen, 11-year-old Axton received a new, custom chair from caring strangers.
  • Local nonprofits and businesses provided specialized mobility equipment and support for his family.
  • The community raised $2,500 and gifted additional outdoor gear and hiking equipment.

A small act of kindness transformed a heartbreaking situation for Axton Bird and his family. When the 11-year-old’s wheelchair was taken, local nonprofits and caring community members quickly stepped in to help.

Axton, living with a rare condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, relied on his donated wheelchair for mobility after insurance did not cover one.

“When the wheelchair was stolen, we kind of hit rock bottom,” Axton’s dad, Jayson Bird, shared.

Mike Felice from Disabled Outdoorsmen Utah saw the family’s story and rallied support, encouraging everyone to focus on positive action. Thanks to this teamwork, Axton received a specially designed wheelchair operated with his elbow.

The gestures kept coming: Kings Camo gave him hunting gear, and Huckleberry Hiking donated equipment so he can enjoy trails. Supporters also raised $2,500 for the family’s extra needs.

“Overwhelmed, overjoyed, speechless,” Jayson expressed about the thoughtful gifts. “To watch our son have the independence and mobility that he deserves…means the world to us and our family.”

Generosity and compassion turned loss into hope, creating new opportunities for Axton and his loved ones.
