Quick Smiles:15-month-old twins separated in groundbreaking surgeryA dedicated team of 30+ worked together for the complex procedureTwins are now happily growing and developing at homeAfter months of detailed planning, Ally and El, conjoined twins joined at the pelvis, were separated during an 18-hour surgery at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Post-surgery updates reveal both are now “thriving at home” as they continue to receive specialized care and support. The operation involved more than 30 medical professionals and took place on February 28, 2025. Such surgeries are extremely rare, as conjoined twins occur in only 1 in every 50,000 to 100,000 pregnancies.“Conjoined twins are rare, and twins joined at the pelvis, as Ally and El were, are even a bit rarer,” Dr. Caitlin A. Smith, co-director of the reconstructive pelvic medicine program at Seattle Children’s, said in a statement.Preparation for the procedure spanned nearly a year and included active involvement and clear communication with the twins’ parents. On the day of surgery, the team carefully separated their gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and urologic systems.“The relief that they were separated and safe was incredible,” said Smith. “Each twin got what they needed, thanks to our amazing, dedicated team who worked to ensure Ally and El’s health and safety were priority number one.”Ally and El were discharged in late May 2025 and have been making tremendous progress at home. With support from rehabilitation specialists and therapists, they are building new skills, regaining movement, and exploring the world around them.Their mother, Sam, shared her joy: “It has been incredible to watch [the girls] crawl quickly, learn new words and see their distinct personalities take shape.”Follow more uplifting moments and medical milestones like this in every issue of Healthy Happy News!Source
