  • Youyu’s afforestation project now covers over 240,000 acres.
  • The county is recognized globally for ecological restoration success.

Once plagued by relentless sandstorms and barren landscapes, a rural Chinese village in Youyu county has restored its region into a lush patchwork of forests, orchards, and community spaces.

Through decades of dedication, families like tree-planter Wang Zhanfeng’s chose to remain and fight for nature, nurturing seedlings, carrying water from mountains, and perfecting sustainable forestry techniques despite harsh conditions.

“In my childhood, we had to cover our bowls while eating, otherwise they would be filled with sand,” Wang shared with China Daily.

The painstaking work, involving entire communities and innovative soil methods, spanned 240,000 acres and overcame difficult, arid terrain.

The United Nations honored Youyu’s incredible turnaround with the New Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Award, highlighting it as a beacon for ecological recovery and desert control.

With the return of fertile land came flourishing opportunities—Youyu now excels in horse breeding, soccer talent, agriculture, and tourism, significantly boosting the local economy.

If you’re seeking a story of hope for our planet, this village’s victory over desertification offers a shining example of collective action and perseverance.
